HEAT, HUMIDITY, AND LEATHER

Attending leather events during the summer on the east coast can be a bit overwhelming. The contestants can only pray that the air conditioning is working well where ever the event is being held. Of course those in attendance supporting the event are thinking the same thing.

July 8 the Mid Atlantic Leather Sir/boy contest was held in Baltimore. The AC was cranked up to the max. Two Sir's and two boys were competing. PA Leather Sir Ryan Tittel and boy Justin John Costellos. Md Leather Sir Chris Hacker and Leather boy Jason Sentz.

The four seemed pretty evenly matched. When Jim Raymond tallied the scores, emcee Al Santora announced Mid-Atlantic Leather Sir Ryan Tittel and leather boy Justin Costellos. The two will compete at the Intl contest being held this year in Dallas during Columbus Day weekend .

The current Intlernational Leather Sir Dexter Edmond who served as a judge has made so many friends during his travels these past few months. Gracious, intelligent, and a real diplomat. The exact same can be said for Mike Fry (boy Stallion) Intl Leather boy.

During the month of June the Northeast Leather Sir and boy contest was held. Robert Valin, Mr. EagleNYC 05 emceed this event at the NY Eagle. Since there was only one Sir contestant and one boy contestant, only a 70 % score was required to win. Lonie "Cisco" McGowan from Jersey City, NJ was announced Northeast Leather Sir. Ray Rivera from Hamden, CT. grabbed the Leather boy sash. Both will compete for the International title in Dallas in October.

Intl. Ms Leather celebrated twenty years of contests in Omaha NE.this past weekend. Only two contestants were competing for the IMSL title and only one contestant competed for the bootblack title. The women seem to be having a hard time finding contestants similar to the men's delima.

When all was said and done Lady Faye from Dallas was announced as IMSL 2006.Max Bettencourt from Boston, MA, was named Ms Intl Boot Black 2006

Even bigger than the announcement of the winner, was the news that IMSL is being sold to a new producer...It was announced that Former Ms Baltimore Leather Glenda Rider will be assuming the reins. and that IMSL will be held in the city of it's origin 20 years ago. San Francisco for the year 2007 and 2008.

A very special afternoon occurred recently at the National Portrait Gallery. Artist Nagrom Monceaux and special invited friends, family and supporters were on hand to witness the acceptance by the Portrait Gallery officials of Nagroms work. I know of very few (if any) members of the leather community who can lay claim to that honor in the nations capital.

And the Dish goes on.......

The Master/slave conference was held in DC and a large amount of attendees were there. Leathermen and women from coast to coast had a very good time. Some contestants for the up coming Mr. World Leather were there. Former ABW producer Roger (brass) Fleming and his master arrived from Florida. During the weekend Roger entered a fun jock strap contest at the Green Lantern. Yes, he won over 9 other contestants. If you think he was shocked, you should have seen the look on his master's face!

For some of the old timers of the leather community who were out and about during the M/s conference, yes that was Steve Desdier you saw. Steve was the founder of the Mr. San Diego Leather contest way back in the early 80's and was looking great.

Ms. Baltimore Eagle 2006 (Joanna Millhouse) is not letting any grass grow under her feet. She is proudly upholding the title, and is attending just about everything. Let's hope Baltimore is giving her their full support.

Patrons of the New York Eagle are very proud of one of the owners. Derek Danton grabbed two silver medals at the Gay Games in Chicago. He is quite the sprinter. Congratulations. Not too many bar owners have pulled that off.

ABW producer and American Leatherwoman 2003 Sheryl Dee has tendered her resignation as a producer of that event. Sheryl's busy schedule has forced her to cut back on some of her obligations. ABW staff appreciates her involvement and time. Thanks Sheryl.

What a shame that a certain loud mouth female saw fit to bad mouth a leather brother. Did you think the nasty things you said would not get back to him? or maybe you wanted them to? In any event, where was your compassion or concern or offer to help a person in need? Some people thought you were above that type of bitchiness (obviously not). Considering the fact that you never took the time to know or talk to the person, maybe you should have kept quiet.

New owner/producer of IMSL, Glenda Rider has wasted no time in getting the word out with regard to IMSL dates next year. July 13 - 15, 2007 and already is putting together the staff and crew and asking those interested to contact her. Executive Producer@imsl.org Glenda is a delightful person and I am sure IMSL will take on a whole new look.

PRIDE , PREJUDICE and INDEPENDENCE

As the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Such is the case with pride festivals occurring throughout the country. I loved observing and making notes on various events.

In the nations capital the two day event took place beginning on Saturday and ending Sunday evening. The late Saturday afternoon parade, was just that. Late. Lags in the parade were so long until many observers thought it was over several times. After all these years these parade committee volunteers still cannot keep a parade moving at a reasonable speed.

By the time the parade ended the last few entrants could not be seen because it was dark. I am sure every pride parade in a city where city and county elections are being held in the upcoming months had candidates walking, waving, smiling and passing out voter pamphlets.

Washington was no different, since this is a mayoral election year. Several candidates even changing their view in midstream on the gay marriage issue. No, they were not in favor, however by the time the parade came around---oh yes they were all for it. Especially if they can capture the gay/lesbian vote.

Some candidates, many had never heard of, but there they were acting like they had been a supporter of gay issues for years. Yeah right! One Mayoral candidate began courting the gay vote as early as February 2006, when he donated a large sheet cake to the annual Scarlet Bake sale auction. Of course a likeness of him covered the cake. He did show up at the event, which was more than any of the others did. As usual the Pride festival was held on Pennsylvania Ave a few blocks from the White House. No the Bushes or the Cheney's were not in attendance (imagine that). Vendors were out hawking their wares and food wagons were everywhere. One banking institution had the bright idea of bringing portable ATM machines, and placing them right in the middle of everything. Yes, they were well frequented. By the time the Festival was over you had a huge Washington Blade plastic bag full of pamphlets, brochures and info on everything from saving mice in Alaska to musical bidet's.

Of course there are always the dummies gay and straight, who supposedly are pet lovers dragging their dogs around in the blazing hot sun forcing their pets to endure walking on that hot, hot pavement without water. What is wrong with that picture? Love your pet? Yeah, right!

The month of June of course brought ugliness by way of a bitter, stupid titleholder from Charm City (Baltimore) who decided to verbalize his racist feelings on that ridiculous titleholder page. Using the "N" word several times in his/her ranting's. Using the excuse of "I was drunk" did not hold water the second time around. No apology to the community, or to the person he attempted to defame. Her sash was removed as the current Ms. Baltimore Eagle 2006.

The title was given to the first runner up Joanna Millhouse.Ms. Baltimore Eagle 2006.

On a more pleasant note, accomplished artist, leatherman and former title holder Sir Nagrom Monceaux has made the art world news in the nations capital. The National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute has reopened after a five year renovation. Four fine pieces of Nagrom's work are hanging in the Gifts to the Nation hall. for the world to view.. Much can be said about this fine artist. who resides in Baltimore, MD. 'Our gay community is so fortunate to have him in our midst. To own one of his works would be a treasure. If you are in the DC area it is well worth the time to visit the National Portrait Gallery and all the exhibits especially Sir Nagrom. Several years ago Nagrom donated several of his works of art to the American Brotherhood Weekend auction.

The work brought in an astounding $30,000.00 that evening in a matter of minutes.

Anyone interested in viewing and obtaining a work of art from Nagrom can contact this columnist for additional information.

The community was saddened to learn of the passing of two leathermen this past week. Eric Rofes. gay activist and author, died in Province town, MA. Rofes was spending the summer there, while working on a book. Eric was a remarkable person who I had the pleasure of knowing. He has left us with great books and teachings. To say he will be missed is an understatement. Condolences to his partner Crispin Hollings and his family.

The city of Chicago has lost yet another wonderful leatherman. Known as Ray Ray to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him during IML or any other time you were visiting the windy city. Ray Ray had been a member of the IML staff from the beginning in 1979. His infectious smile and wonderful personality will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family and to his IML staff family..

July 10, 2006, the Hippo located in Baltimore, will host the Mid Atlantic Leather Sir/boy contest. The winner will compete in Dallas in October for the International title. Admission to this event is 25.00 at the door. Doors open at 1:00 PM.

International Ms. Leather 2006. Intel. Boot Black 2006 July 14 -16, 2006.Omaha, NE. This is the Twentieth anniversary of IMSL. More information is on the IMSL web site.

Mr& Ms. World is coming up soon. This year the event will be held in Philadelphia, PA. August 25-27.This will be the first year for the Mr. World Leather competition. Applications are available on their web site.

GPD....Gay Pride Dish

Imagine being invited to judge a contest in a city that you have never visited. And being invited by the host to stay with him. Then days before the contest receiving a call informing the guest that you had no room for him because too many others were flopping there. And to top it off, not making any alternate plans for the person. Other outside people had to call around and find a place for the person to stay. And that's how one Intl. title holders was treated recently.

Amazing when POC and others, choose to ignore something as blatant as the comments made on that title holder page and chose to disregard it hopes it would either go away or hope leather activists miles and miles away would address the issue. It happened in their own back yard. What became of people standing up for what is right? OR WRONG. Why not grab a broom and sweep it under the rug and ignore that it ever happened. Such seems to be the case in some cities.

If that person who wants so badly to become a member of one of the DC clubs, would stop bad mouthing various members of other organizations, maybe, just maybe he might be considered for a trial membership. Sometimes silence is golden.

Just where is it written that you have to have a contest when there is only one contestant? Does the word CANCEL mean anything? The ridiculous ruling of having to make a certain amount of percentage points by the contestant means absolutely nothing. It is obvious judging from some past contestants who were given the title they did not deserve even fifty percent. There is no shame in not having a qualified contestant. Would it be better to have one who embarrasses the bar, the leather community, and themselves. Which is worse?

There are so many reasons why men and boys and women are reluctant to enter leather competitions. Financially, it can be a killer on your wallet. The lack of support from some sponsoring bars or organizations. The lack of mentors and advisors once you have won the title. Even more recently the hassle of receiving reimbursements (as promised) from some of those sponsors who hold the purse strings on travel funds. But let us not forget those contestants who think they know everything and refuse any advice from previous title holders who have offered to help.

So, what's left? Entrants who have entered contests over and over, just to have another sash to add to their collection. Commonly known as sash rash. Only representing their title or community when it suits them. For some who no one ever saw or heard from during their title year, you can bet they won't miss signing up for the parade of title holders at various leather events.

Thank goodness the introduction of former "hoo-haws" is not on the IML program each year. We would all be there until July 4th.

How sad to hear of the closing of the Dixie Belle Complex in Kansas City. The patrons were so friendly and the clubs which called that their home bar, are all wonderful guys. Let's hope this does not prevent the "show me state" from having a representative at IML next year.

Canada Sweeps IML 2006

Canada is the home of the new IML for 2006. Bo Ladashevska, Mr. Leather Montreal grabbed the golden ring. Larry Golubski Mr., Long Beach Leather was named first runner up. Phillippe Lepine, Mr. Fetish Switzerland won the second runner up spot. International Boot Black title went to a Canadian contestant Benjamin Palmer from Vancouver BC.

With the exception of a new contest location things went along pretty much as usual. The Chicago Theatre located on world famous State Street indeed was a sight to behold. Restored to it's original splendor, the building exemplifies the workmanship of a bygone era. Magnificent is the one word that can describe the place.

So many who attended this years event each had their own take and critique, I wondered if I had attended a different event? The lobby stalkers were everywhere, the disgusting classless people doing things in the lobby that should have been done behind closed doors, and the drunken slobs who should have been thrown out into the street after urinating on the main lobby walls. It's no wonder the hotel management tried to cover the carpet with as much plastic as possible.

Does anyone really care about the contest and who won? From the amount of people in the hotel lobby while the contest was being held, the answer would be a resounding no. One former Intl. titleholder found it to be too much of an imposition to walk three blocks to support the contestant from his city, who I might add made the top 20, for fear he just might miss (for three hours) something/someone lurking in the hotel lobby.

There once was a time when contestants for IML competed because they really wanted to represent to the best of their ability, their home bar, their city, their region and even their state. Sadly that has changed. The respect for leather and what it once represented has gone the way of the hula hoop and saddle shoes. Working out, looking their best, and a knowledge of the history of the leather community and why Chuck Renslow initiated the wonderful event means very little. Pecs and Personality? What has that become? A sad miss mash of ridiculous costumes. Face masks, Homey the clown footwear and head- dresses that should be seen on a stage in Las Vegas.

One wonders how many of the 51 contestants who entered this year, really gave any thought to how and what they wanted to represent? How prepared were they to be the representative of the international leather community? Even more important is the question, did they really want to become IML?

A number of contestants have already said after the contest "I am so glad I did not win." Well, if you are so glad you did not win, why did you bother to even enter your local contest? Was it because you were the only contestant? Was it because the local judges figured you were the best of the two or three that were there? Or was it the best answer of all: Just to go to Chicago and have a good time sleeping around, and the hell with the contest.

Yes, IML has changed over the years. People, attitudes, and seemingly the leather credo. Let us not forget all of the old. Values, integrity and the strong sense of being. Replacing it with a circuit party atmosphere, and an added attraction of a leather pageant was not the way it use to be.

IML had many firsts this year. The Chicago Theatre, comedian/entertainer/writer Bruce Vilanch, and a leather arade down State Street (in 90 plus degree heat) in route to the theatre. A special thank you to those responsible for the great IML official program guide. Everything was included in that guide.

Another first was the fact that in it's 16 year history American Brotherhood current title holders were no where to be seen. except for the current American Leather boy 06. We can only hope this is not a pattern set for the rest of their title year.

The Memorial service for Thom Dombkowski was a fitting tribute to the man who gave his life to serving others. Gone but certainly not forgotten.

The nations capital held their second annual Mr. Capital Pride Leather 2006 contest. Tsar Agus last years winner passed the sash to Allen Washington. Allen will lead the leather contingency at the Capital Pride Parade next weekend. Allen will also compete at MAL next January 2007.

Chicago Deep Dish............

While Marcus the Merciless, and the witch were holding court in the lobby of the host hotel, they were interrupted repeatedly by squeals, groans and a body rolling around on the floor... Daddy Jim Raymond had struck again. and had his favorite toy a remote control - - - - ring on ALM 00 Dean Ogren. Everyone loved holding that remote. For such a big man he sure can move fast.

Records are made to be broken. IML '05 made history with the longest IML step-down speech. IML 99, and 01, you all can take a back seat---way back. However it was a great speech, it you care to read it you can go to Michael Egdes website. Should you print it have paper it is 14 pages.

IML's favorite Den Daddy, Walter Klinger, was in attendance this year, Walter was a good boy all year so he was rewarded with a day pass from Miss Annie Mae's rest home to attend the weekend event. Walter looks fabulous. Jim "Dottie" Dohr a member of the OGN with Walter was looking very spiffy. What is OGN? OLD GIRLS NETWORK. oops

By the way for any of you who attended IML during the 80's and wondered about another pillar of the IML family.Harley McMillan, Harley is well and living in Wisconsin. He was the Bill Stadt of those years...

Just when one was ready to enjoy the weekend, what blows into the Windy City none other than Hurricane-Wil-Ma from Florida...When he walked up to one of the IML judges and introduced himself, the response he received was "Oh you, Why are you here?" Hmmmm I guess his crap preceded him.

Pity some people do not pay attention to good advice. The well known columnist on the left coast told many potential contestants, stay off that ridiculous title holder page, if you're going to IML. Shame some didn't listen. Obviously too many people with too much time on their hands. Nothing but babble and BS.

Here we are in Charm City (Baltimore) where MD Leather Sir and leather boy came up with a novel way to raise money. They decided to have a Strip N Dance. In this case they were the strippers and the dancers. No word on how much money was raised. But word is out the place was packed and it was indeed a Kodak moment.

Have the Men of Onxy (Chicago Chapter) ever given some thought to expanding their search for a title holder? How many chapters do they have now? Perhaps changing the name of the title might help. Most observers realize the contestant is a man of color by simply looking. So, is a sash advertising that information necessary? Two men of African American background in a group of 51 contestants. Shame!

AMERICAN LOST WEEKEND

American Brotherhood Weekend 2006 winners were:
Rusty Jones, American Leatherman, Seattle, WA., Shelly Denton, American Leatherwoman, Seattle, WA., Ed Kosary, American Leather boy, Dallas, TX, American Leather girl, Dawn Marie, Philadelphia, PA.

The other contestants were Sir Y, Burton, Washington, DC, Saliena Bowers, Austin, TX; Jimmie Tucker, Dallas, TX; boy B, Washington, DC; boi Shannon, Albany, NY; Talia Rizzi, Orlando, FL; Mera Tucker, Dallas, TX.

The sixteenth annual American Brotherhood weekend was held in the nations capital. The highs and the lows during the weekend were not without drama. The sparkle and pizzazz always associated with this event fell short of the mark this year.

Comments from some in attendance ranged from it was fun, to I will not be returning next year. It was evident from the small amount of previous ABW titleholders attending that something was not quite right. Very few contenders for the IML title were there which has not been the case in the past. Overall weekend attendance was down from past years.

The list of complaints ranged from problems with the hotel and the non existent breakfast coupons that were to be given to the guests (received on the second day) rather than at check in, to some of the rude hotel security. Inadequate space for contestants to safely store their personal belongings to nothing provided for the volunteers to eat other than cookies. The complaints went on and on.

Poorly organized, poorly staffed were top of the list complaints by some who were involved. A major overhaul of this event from top to bottom needs to be strongly discussed and considered to put this weekend back on track.

When word from Chicago hit DC like a bolt of lightning, that Thomas Dombkowski (affectionately known as the chief) former head judge at IML had passed away, there was stunned disbelief. Anyone who has ever attended IML knows the name, and most likely had met the man. What an enormous loss, not only to Chicago, but to the entire leather community. We will miss you Thom. Deepest sympathy to his family and partners. IML will never be quite the same. A memorial service will be held during IML weekend in Chicago.

Known as Charm City, Baltimore was the scene for the Mr. & Ms. Baltimore Eagle Leather contest. The event was held Saturday afternoon. This reporter has witnessed many contests over the years, but none quite like this one.

Three contestants for the men's competition and two for the women's. When the contest ended, and the winners were announced...Larry Roscoe grabbed the Mr. Baltimore Eagle 2006 title. Kristine Shadow was named Ms. Baltimore Eagle. Ms. Shadow is the former Mid- Atlantic Leatherboy 2003 (Gary Lynch). And no, he has not gone for the MTF operation. That will happen in the next year or so. It was explained that he/she has the option to enter other contests or to not enter any contests at all. What were the judging criteria's for the Ms. contest is anyone's guess?

DC Leatherfest Weekend, kicks off the Month of May. It is a weekend filled (so it seems) with something for everyone. Casino night, Educational seminars, Women's only parties, leather bar parties, Block party, vendor mart, and a leather dance. Admission to events range from $10 to $20 depending on the event. Hopefully there will be a large turnout for this first time event.

DISH washing.......

For a few of the ABW contestants they must have overlooked the complete name of the title they were competing for. Tucked away somewhere was the word Leather. Not American fabric contest. Why would anyone show up for a judged interview and not wear a single bit of leather? Some judges were wondering.

Perhaps someone can explain why the American Flag was displayed incorrectly at ABW? One former Veterans Administration employee in attendance was appalled. Even more so when it stayed that way the entire weekend after the powers that be were notified of the error.

In the promoting future events department----- Those in charge of Leatherfest felt no need to show up during the weekend for American Brotherhood. Does the word support come to mind? Just what is needed, another contest. In Oklahoma, there are some who feel a new contest is needed. The name so far seems to be Master Slave Universe, or something to that effect. The producers are looking to make it a regional type event so that all areas of the US can get in on this. Stay tuned. What wrong with this picture department-----
When asked what was the reason a particular contestant did not win in a recent contest. The judge replied well, they were excellent and impressive during the interview portion, but were too new. So how many years must one wait until they are no longer considered new? Was not everyone considered "new" once upon a time? Perhaps even that judge. Hello?

A small poll of local members of the gay/leather community here in the DC area was conducted. Not as many as one would think are in favor of immigration reform. If the decision were left to some, there would be a wall erected as high and wide as the great wall of China between the US and our south of the border neighbors.

Flash back in time------ Where were you 25 years ago? If you were a leatherman living in San Francisco, and it was a Wednesday evening. You were racing to the then famous SF Eagle to attend the weekly DINNER AND DYNASTY PARTY. Oh yes some of those big burly leathermen were served dinner and watched Dynasty like everyone else. Just loving those fashions that Joan Collins, and Linda Evans wore. Not to mention Steven Carrington, written into the script as a cute gay man was all the talk. The one night that the bathhouses and play were on hold until after Dynasty.

AMERICAN LETDOWN WEEKEND

For an event that has been in existance for sixteen years, the reviews for ABW 2006 are less than one would have expected. The sparkle and pizaaz always associated with this event fell short of the mark this year.

Turn out of former ABW title holders was very low. Turnout of title holders in general were less than expected. Being able to place a finger on what went wrong is up for conjecture. For starters, perhaps it was the not a gay friendly host hotel.or the area of the bldg where the event was held. Hotel security was less than considerate.

All big events, always have glitches, but generally are behind the scenes type - not as glaring such as some of these were. Try as hard as they could, the producers did not seem to pull this off. Perhaps the under lying problems dealing with who could and who should not enter as a contestant this year ebbed to the surface and bubbled over leaving a distinct oder and bad taste in the mouths of those involved.

The sets and backdrops were stale for year number sixteen. Nothing really seemed to keep the attention of attendees focused. It has been learned that some former ABW title holders stayed away in protest to new rules that were put in place regarding a change in wording on the entry applications. Whatever the case, it was obvious that this was not the ABW weekend of years past where the entire weekend sparkled like a crown jewel.

On a breakdown of the titles, two contestants for American Leatherman, two contestants for American Leatherwoman, four contestants for American Leatherboy, and two contestants for American Leathergirl.

Frank Nowicki handled the emcee duties with his usual professional and rapid fire wit, and kept things running very smoothly. Judges this year were Judy Tallwing McCarthy, (head judge) Sir Nagrom Monceaux, Glenda Rider, Matt Foreman, Marcus Hernandez and the four out going title holders, Blackkat, Amanda "PUP" Farrell, Ryan Setzkorn and Girl Kim. With the contest itself being a two day event, lots of fantasies were performed giving way to levity and laughter from the audience.

And the Winner is...

March has arrived. Dozens of leather events have been held across the country. American Brotherhood Weekend will be the next big one. The advertising seems to be rather slow on this terrific event. If you like fun, good times and great weather then April in the nations capital is definitely the place to visit.

American Brotherhood Weekend takes place April 21 - 23. where the selection of American Leatherman, American Leather Woman, American Leather boy, and American Leather Girl for 2006 will be chosen.

Not to be compared to IML, this event brings together men, women, boys and girls and an impressive array of contestants from all around the US. If you are not one for huge crowds and mega circuit parties, and would like to spend a great weekend getting to know all the attendees and making new friends, this is the event for you.

Judges for this years event will be Blackkat, ALM 2005, Amanda "PUP" Farrell, ALW 2005, Ryan Setzkorn, ALB 2005, Girl Kim, ALG 2005, Judy Tallwing McCarthy, Head Judge, Nagrom Moncieux, Artist, Marcus Hernandez, Columnist, Matt Foreman, Executive Director, NGLTF, Glenda Ryder, NCSF. Peter Lloyd and Peter Kincheloe are this years tally masters.

Mr. Eagle NYC 2006 (Christophe Andre) held a very successful auction at the Eagle in NYC, St. Patrick's Day. The event benefited Body Positive of NYC. Twenty-two Hundred dollars was raised in just under 2 hours. Auctioneer Brian Kent (Mr. Eagle NYC 04) had the attendees digging in their pockets and laughing as they did so.

The Leather Leadership Conference celebrates it's tenth anniversary returning to the city of it's roots NYC. Hopefully it will be a successful conference.

For some unknown reason the STARS M/C of Albany have decided to drop their Leather boy contest this year. Last years title holder boi shannon, will not be able to sash a successor. Boi Shannon has been an outstanding representative for the entire northeast area. I wish him well.

For all you active and retired titleholders who are still procrastinating and have not filed your taxes. Former ABW producer Roger Fleming has advised in the event you are not aware, you can deduct all your travel expenses for representing your title. He will be happy to complete and file your returns for you. He is in Florida with H & R Block. Contact: info taxesdoneright@aol.com.

In case you feel there is need for another leather contest and title, here's one for you. Mr. North America Leather. The producer of this one resides in Montreal and was a member of MC Faucon. No details on date or other pertinent information. However, stay tuned.

The Cherry Blossom festival kicks off this week. If you have never attended, it is quite a sight to see. Over five thousand cherry trees all in bloom. There are dozens of events and a parade of course. Kind of takes one's mind off the clown at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for a day or two.

Charm City (Baltimore) held their Mr. Maryland Leather Sir/boy contest. One contestant for Sir and two for the boy title. MD. Leather Sir this year is Chris Hacker, Bowie, MD and MD Leather boy is Jason Sentz, Baltimore. Boy Cedric was first runner up. Congratulations to all of them.

In the Big Apple a new club has started. Leather Invasion. Robert Valin (Mr. Eagle NYC '05) is the founder of this one. Seems to be receiving great reviews from the attendees.

In DC a meet and greet social was held Friday night. Twenty or so Leathermen attended. This is the first meeting and formation of the DC chapter of the men of ONYX. The Los Angeles chapter of ONYX held their first event this past week. Onyx seems to be spreading their wings. Four chapters now exist. Leo Shelton and Rod Brown are heading up the DC Chapter.

Cherry Blossom Dish............

NY held their annual black party on the 25 of March. The party began at 11 PM with a charge of $125.00. However if you waited until 4 AM the charge was only $40---and if you were under 30. Hmmmmmm that would just make me want to rush right down there.

DC's favorite hotel catering manager, Patrick Grady celebrated a birthday this past week. A huge crowd was on hand to wish him the best. The comments as guests arrived were, "Oh look who just came in" Chile I didn't know she was still alive, to "What happened to her'?

Glad you don't live in Texas? Now that police can come into a bar and arrest you for being intoxicated, even if you have a designated driver with you. Cute, real cute.

Overheard at a gathering by some who attended the MD. Leather Sir/boy contest. "Thirty minutes of leather contest and three hours of drag. Why does every leather contest have to have a drag show"? Fortunately there are still a few leather bars in the US who just host a contest without bad lip synching.

So far no one has stepped to the plate offering to sponsor or produce the Virginia Leather Sir/boy. Seems to be the same situation in DC. What is going on in the Keystone State? It's kind of sad to have a Mid-Atlantic contest and have no competition. Hopefully this will change.

American Brotherhood has been around since 1989. This will be the sixteenth year. You would never know it due to the lack of advertising and promoting. Contrary to belief this contest did not suddenly pop up in the past five years. Nor did it begin with the formation of ABLE Productions. How sad to read the history of ABW and not see any information on the first four American Leathermen and the first three American Leatherwomen, absolutely nothing about them. Title holders without a photo or information. Don't these titleholders deserve recognition? After all they blazed a trail for all who followed. Whoever threw that together should be embarrased.

SCOTT HARRIS IS MAL 2006
Mid-Atlantic Leather 2006 Report
Mr. Marcus/San Francisco

FEBRUARY FORUM

A general calm has prevailed in February. Most people are catching their breath from the holidays. Mid-Atlantic Leather weekend kicked off the 2006 leather season. Every month from now until Memorial Day weekend and IML are filled with leather contests. Not all who enter these various contests will be vying for a place in the IML class of 2006.

American Brotherhood weekend, and the selection of the American Leather family for 2006 will be one event held in the Nations capital in April. Intl. Leather Sir/boy regional are also going on. Even in DC, the search for Mr. Capital Pride Leather 2006 is gearing up.

Texas, California, Florida, Iowa have all had leather contests. Each state hoping their contestant will capture the golden ring in Chicago next May.

While all this was happening, a surprise announcement was issued from the President of DCI productions. Mike Zuhl issued a statement. International Leather Sir 2005 (Michael Congdon ) has relinquished his title. Citing an inability to meet the demanding schedule of the title, and personal reasons.

Dexter Edmond from Huntsville, Alabama and first runner up has assumed the responsibilities and duties associated with the title International Leather Sir 2005. Congratulations to We are sure his year will be outstanding.

February is Black History Month. Also the shortest month of the year. We have little time to be informed of all the great contributions and inventions that the Afro-American community has bestowed upon all of us. The recent death of Coretta Scott King, certainly has given many the reason to stop and reflect on how far the Civil Rights movement has come and how much farther it needs to go. The Gay and Lesbian community will always remember her words and hold dear her support.

With that thought in mind, Chicago photographer Israel Wright has an exhibit on display at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Entitled, The Journey, located in the Gage Gallery, will be on display from January 30 to March 10.

In the nations capital, plans are underway for the first DC LeatherFest. The event will be held May 5 thru May 7. The weekend will consist of seminars, casino night, outdoor block '' party and a dance party. This event will benefit local charities. Michael Sessa chairperson, is also seeking presenters. For more information contact www.DCLeatherFest.org

In New York City, Robert Valin, Mr. Eagle NYC 2005 has formed a new club: NYC Leather Invasion. It is hoped it will bring together leathermen and put the kink back into NYC. for more information contact

For visitors and residents of Washington, DC, You may have heard of the closings of several gay bars and establishments in the district southeast side. Locals have known for sometime the possibility of that coming to pass is true. In the past year the Mayor of DC and the city council have been at odds over this issue. With the arrival of the Washington Nationals baseball team, a new baseball stadium is planned on the site where the Follies Theater, Heat, Club Washington Baths and Ziegfelds-Secrets are located. If a court ordered eviction goes into effect, this week could possibly be the last week for business at these establishments. Many will be out of work, and there are no locations being offered a future reopening. A very sad situation indeed for the gay community.

THE DISH KIDNAPPED THE SPOON.....

Where are they now department?

IML '95 Larry Everett, received news this past week that he has become a Grandfather. The arrival of Natalia Rachelle Sanchez on Feb 4 has grandpa beaming. That little girl has no idea of how many Aunties she will have. Congratulations to Larry and his daughter.

People are still wondering why Mr. Iowa Leather 05 did not have the decency to even show for his stepping aside in Des Moines, IA. No call, No letter. Nothing! But then some caught that same act last September with a failure to show to judge the Mr, Dixie Belle Leather contest in Kansas City.

The Stitch and Bitch department......

The feuding and fighting and disagreements seem to be mounting in the city by the Golden Gate over charges of discrimination with DCI Inc., and who should or should not be allowed to enter as a contestant. The sad part of all this is, another issue. Does the owner of a contest have the right to set the rules of entry or bow to the wishes of those few who may want to enter said contest? Let's hope this will not turn into a see ya in court situation.

Foot in Mouth (big time) department.......

Picture this: You are attending a large Southern California Avitar Club anniversary. Over 160 leather folk in attendance. The time came to do the parade of colors. From the pre-printed sign up list, the President of the club announced the following knowing it was not politically correct: United Niggers on the Corner as a club. Needless to say there is no such club. The room became so silent that you could have heard a rat urinating on cotton four blocks away. Jaws dropped. Insulting and insensitive to those in attendance.

Not funny in the least, and at some point the President of the club made an apology to those in attendance.

[Editor's note: See sidebar editorial here.]

Dismissed Department....

It is the opinion of this writer that the ridiculous lawsuit being perpetrated by that title holder in the sunshine state will be best served by giving the person doing all the stirring no more space in this column. Hurri-cane Wil-ma has blown through here for the last time.

"Ms. Olympus Leather is Alesha Raven De Fury
(Lady Raven) of Steubenville, Ohio,
and
Mr. Olympus Leather is Terrell Brown
of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma."

"This outcome should quell any racist innuendo
and FTM and MTF debates.
Both Raven and Terrell are African-American;
Lady Raven is a MTF person.
The community looks forward
to a productive year.
The two put this title on the map!"

SCOTT HARRIS IS MAL 2006
Mid-Atlantic Leather 2006 Report
Mr. Marcus/San Francisco

HIGH COW IN THE NATIONS CAPITAL

The spotlight was shinning on Washington, DC. Mid -Atlantic Leather weekend was the star. From far and near leathermen and women gathered to witness the selection of Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2006.

The Centaur MC once again put on a dazzling show. Fifteen hundred to two thousand were in attendance. If anyone did not have a good time, then it was their own fault.

The vendor mart, leather cocktails, parties galore, and the Mid-Atlantic Leather contest kept everyone busy. It is a non stop weekend. The lobby of the Washington Plaza Hotel produced an unending view of eye candy. Something for everyone.

The always must attend and always popular Leather Cocktails brought out the High Cow of leather fashion. Oh yes, this was not a low moo event.

Nine contestants were viewing for the title MAL 2006. And they did strut their stuff both on and off the stage. Tsar Angus, Mr. Capital Pride Leather, Bryce Cain, Mr. Pittsburgh Eagle, Chris Hacker, first runner up Maryland Leather, Dany Bergeron, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, David Murphy, Mr. Connecticut Leather, Jerry Garmany, Mr. Baltimore Eagle, Scott Harris, Mr. Double L Leather, Tom Savage, Mr. New Jersey Leather

The judges this year were, Michael Egdes, IML 05, Randie Smith, American Leather boy 00, Jessie Holman-Ahart, IMSL 05, David Allen, Amanda "pup" Farrell, Robert Davis, and Steve Ranger.

Tally Masters were Jim Raymond, American Leatherman 97 and Pandora. Judges boy was Kevin "boy beetle" McCartney.

Emcee Frank Nowicki, kept the show right on time, and the entertainer Judy Gold kept the audience in stitches as she tossed out some real zingers no one was spared from what came from her sharp tongue as Judges Randie Smith, Michael Egdes, columnist Mr. Marcus and Frank Nowicki soon found out. All in good fun and the audience loved it.

When the moment of truth finally arrived Scott Harris grabbed the title, Clay Angus was first runner up and Tom Savage was the second runner up. Jerry Garmany was presented the Brotherhood award which was voted on by his fellow contestants.

I have said it before and I will say it again, MAL weekend is an event not to be missed. The Centaur MC have the weekend down to a fine science. The Big Daddy of Intl. Leather contests (Chuck Renslow) enjoyed himself immensely and said so several times.

For the past few years MAL has become the venue for announcing the judges selected for IML. This year the judges will be; Larry Barat, DC., Michael Congdon, Seattle, Mark Frazier, Dallas, Mike Frey, Dallas Kendra McClain, Indianapolis, Bob Miller, Chicago, Matthias Peuser, The Netherlands, Jayne Schmid, Toronto, and of course Michael Egdes, IML 05

The Onyx club of Chicago hosted their annual "Chocolate City", Black is Beautiful Party during the weekend. The room was packed, the music was great, and room numbers were being given out like there was no tomorrow. Many in attendance thought the Onyx membership should make "Doc" Hoskins their poster man.

On the other hand ugliness did not prevail. Her-ricane Wil-ma kept her tired fanny in Florida. Talk about a real crap disturber, that one takes the cake. MAL was a wonderful weekend without the sight or sound of H(er). But the big guns were ready in case the wind bag surfaced.

There sure were an awful lot of MAL virgins. Well, at least they were when they first arrived.

Condolences go out to Rik Newton-Tredway (Hooker) and to Peter Lloyd (Potomac MC member) who lost one of their parents during MAL. Our thoughts are with you.

CAPITAL DISH......

Dan Noel (MAL '89) has a new position that will take him to South America soon. I am sure he will be in touch with Andy Rose from the IML class of '89 who spends half his life down there with some South American bomb shell and knows everyone. Just for a few pointers... Yeah right.

The accusations of all male leather contests being discriminatory if they do not allow everyone and anyone to enter has gotten totally out of hand. Another way to divide the community once again. What's the next target IML?

As the old saying goes...Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Well, guess what? Jeweler to the entire leather community John Ponce is now single. Hello? Not sure if that gentleman just prefers blondes oops.

Imagine being a current title holder from the Charm City area and forgetting to attend the second largest contest around. It's nearly in your own back yard dear. He must have been making a new dress for some other function. Hmmmmm.

The number one "vanishing cream" nominee (Cain Berlinger) surfaced from whatever dungeon he has been hiding in. Rumors that he had moved to Hong Kong to produce a Mr. Ebony Leather contest were all false.

A Connecticut Yankee title holder from the recent past has the hot's for a current DC Pride title holder. Now how is he going to explain that to his current long term lover back in CT? Everyone loves intrigue.

Fear not everyone. An advertising flyer surfaced in the MAL weekend packages. Advertising ABW weekend. Sigh, we can all rest now. ABW will happen in April as usual. Fortunately no one will be imprisoned at that hotel in Virginia. The hotel this year will be located in DC. Inn on the Hill is the name. Just a block or two from the US Capitol and close to Union Station.

Jill Carter (IMSL '96) sure seems to know all. How she found out about a ring being given to a certain person at Christmas is still a mystery. The witch needs to take some snooping lessons from her.

The New York bunch which attended MAL (one in particular) Derek Danton has certainly developed a fan club in DC. Handsome, very nice...But married. Sorry fella's. But he does own the most popular leather bar in NYC. But let us not forget Mr. Eagle NYC '06. Single! Hello?

Plans are in the making for Mr. Capital Pride Leather 2006. The location has been set (Titans) and the date will be Saturday, June 3, 2006. Stay tuned for all the information. The winner will compete in DC at MAL 2007.

To that current title holder from a very leather oriented west coast city. Hotel rooms are for what you were doing on the floor at the Reaction Dance! Is that what we have to observe on your next out of town trip? The same goes for the bartender from the big apple..The things that were being done to you could have closed that bar down here in the nations capital. Oh well when you leave your home turf I guess you think you can do anything anywhere. Where was your brain? Never mind, I know where it was.

To Jill Carter: perhaps you should consider writing another book. Only this time devote the entire book to how a contestant should dress for a leather contest, how to behave and what NOT to wear. Where oh where are the Fashion Police? Also known as mentors and advisors.

Mid-Atlantic Leather 2006 Report
Mr. Marcus/San Francisco

Good bye and good riddance to 2005

We all know how horrible Mother Nature was to millions during September. But we also are quite aware of the immediate help that went out to all those in need. I am not referring to FEMA. I am referring to each and everyone who gave, volunteered and held fundraisers. It can be said that once again our leather community from coast to coast were in the forefront. Yes, everyone can pat themselves on the back. I am so proud of everyone who lent a hand in that huge endeavor. Thank you my brothers and sisters.

The witch went into the hospital for major surgery. And no, it was not because a house fell on me. All the cards, calls, flowers and get well messages were so greatly appreciated. I am recuperating and will be up and flying about in a month or two...Thank you.

Leather events kept right on schedule, with the exception of course of Southern Decadence. The NY Eagle celebrated their thirty-fifth anniversary (Sept 30) and the Selection of Mr. Eagle NYC 2006. Seven contestants were vying for the title. In the end, Christophe Andre of NYC grabbed the golden ring. Frank Parisi was first runner up and Rick Webber was second runner up.

The Men of Onyx Held their anniversary and Blackout weekend. This also included the Mr. Leatherman of Color contest. The winner of that contest was Joey Boyton, who will compete at IML. The runner up was "Doc" Hoskins of NYC.

The following week attention was focused on Atlanta, GA. And the International Leather Sir/boy contest the winners there were Michael Congdon Intl Leather Sir 2006 from Seattle, WA, and boy Stallion, Intl Leatherboy from Dallas Texas

The following week The Mr. and MS, NJ Leather contest was held in Asbury Park, One male contestant and two female contestants were seeking those titles. Mr. NJ Leather 2006 is Tom Savage and Ms. NJ Leather is Heather Rovinsky.

Now we move to Baltimore, for the Mr. Maryland Leather 2006 contest (Nov 4). Three contestants were competing. Tony Gellner, Jim Cooke, and Chris Hacker. When those scores were tallied, Jim Cooke was announced as Mr. Maryland Leather. and will compete at IML next May. Also the first runner up Chris Hacker will compete at MAL (Mid Atlantic Leather) in January in Washington, DC.

On Nov 11, The Mr. Connecticut Leather contest '06, took place in New London, CT. Lovable George Peet Mr., CT Leather 05 sashed his successor David Murphy What a terrific role model for the leather community George has been.

November 19, the DC Eagle hosted their Mr. DC Eagle 06 contest, and celebrate their 34 anniversary. There was quite a crowd on hand for that one and to watch Scott Jones sash his successor. His successor is Bennett Long, Mr DC Eagle 2006.

If you are not contested out, Mr. Leather Toronto was chosen Thanksgiving Weekend. Handsome Daniel Gagne grabbed that much sought after title...

Plenty of contests to enter. But so few contestants. This seems to be the same all across the US. Most would like to stand around and look pretty in a sash, until they discover that winning the title just might mean they may have to do something with the title during their year should they win.

Of course you have the ones who do compete and upon learning they did not win, suddenly develop the "it was fixed" attitude and bad mouth the event, and we know that happened a month or so ago.

What a shame to have to read babble in magazines that are self serving. One case comes to mind that was published in the Advocate by a current title holder...I hope he was not comparing himself to Carmen Miranda and her fruit basket hats...She was from Brazil, not Cuba.

Congratulations to Tim Woody. It seems he has captured another title. The new sash now reads Mr. DC Bear 06. From VA leatherboy to Bear. That sash should look quite grand over his flight attendant uniform, as he is serving beverages.

YEAR END DISH.....

Seems as though Florida is quickly becoming the "bone yard" for former title holders. And I thought that title was held solely by Palm Springs...

American Leatherman 04, Robert Napolitano, Walt Weiss, a former Mr. LURE, and IML 04 (Jason Hendrix) have all moved to the hurricane state. Just what is going on in the bedroom suburb of Wilton Manor which is next door to FORT LEATHERDALE?

There are too many Vanishing Cream Award recipients to even list. But the top seven are: Cain Berlinger, Lance Brittian, Leith Chu, Jerel Cooper, Tom Dickerson, boy rick Spencer, and Stephen Weber. Wonder where they go when they fall off the face of the earth?

Any truth to the circulating rumor that a new bar might be opening in the Ft Lauderdale area. And the person thinking about that venture happens to be a member of the IML class of 2005. Number 4 ! Hmmmmm.

If anyone has plans to visit NYC in the near future, The Color Purple the new Broadway Musical is well worth seeing. That was the Witch's Christmas gift from Brian Kent Mr. Eagle NYC 2004 and his boyfriend Jim...Sure as hell beats receiving a fruitcake.

Mid Atlantic Leather Weekend is fast approaching. Always held on Martin Luther King Weekend. Lots of surprises in store for everyone in attendance this year. The Centaur M/C always put on a great show. This event kicks off the Leather season for 2006. Not to be missed Jan 13 - 16.

We all know what a horrendous year 2005 has been. Let's pray and hope that 2006 will be the exact opposite...

HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
